Llyric Driscoll Hits Big Wind-Legal US#1 Triple Jump Mark At State Meet

Western Branch senior Llyric Driscoll soared to a huge personal best and US#1 42-7.50 to win the girls Class 6 triple jump title at the Virginia state high school track and field championships.

Driscoll's winning jump came against a -2.1 m/s headwind.

Osbourn Park’s Lena Gooden claimed the long jump title (19-10.75), a U.S. top 25 mark, while Driscoll was second (19-1.75).

Grassfield’s Morgan Graham won the discus title with a throw of 159-8, a new meet record by eight feet. 

South County sophomore Catalina Sanchious won the 100 (11.89) and 200 (24.15) and guided her team to a 6A repeat team title. 

In the 6A field events, Potomac’s junior Ty'Heak Buie picked up a big personal best as he soared to triple jump state title of 50-0.75, US#11. Teammate Ronald Hewton was runner-up (47-10.50). 

Grassfield Jordan Edwards set a meet record in the 6A shot (62-9), while Patriot  scored 55 points to win the team title.  

In 5A, Kecoughtan boys scored 58 points to win the program’s first state title. 

David Anderson won the discus (169-5) and shot put (59-8). The 4x400 relay (3:22.22) also claimed gold to seal the victory.

Nervier senior Jaydin Williams won the high jump, clearing 7 feet, tied for US#7, setting a meet record. 

Pryncess Jackson of Highland Springs won the 5A 100 hurdles (14.22), triple jump title (39-7.50) and was sixth in the 300 hurdles. In the 5A girls team race, Glen Allen tallied 66 points to win the state title as Elly Velasquez won the 3,200 (11:09.73) and was third in the 1,600.  

Glen Allen’s Emily Romano won the pole vault (12-6). 

4A & 3A - Liberty University (Lynchburg)

Madison Whyte had a record-setting final prep state meet as she led her team to a tie for the 4A team title. The Heritage senior broke her own meet records in the 400 (53.79) and 200 (23.16). She also won the 100 (12.07). Her 400 time is a current U.S. top 15 time. 

Tuscarora and Heritage both scored 62 points.

In field events, Tuscarora High’s Alysa Carrigan won the long jump, (18-6.25), triple jump (39-1) and set a meet record in the high jump (5-8).

In the distance events, Cassidy Scott of Fauquier won the 1,600 (4:53.74) and 800 (2:17.07).

The boys 4A team race came down the wire with Deep Creek scoring 52 points to beat out Courtland (51) and Blacksburg (49). 

Courtland’s Chana Mathis had a banner day. He tied the 4A meet record in the 400 (47.66) and finished second in the 200 and 100. 

Wyatt Shaw of Fauquier won the high jump in a record clearance of 6-8.25. 

Kwame Whitaker of Courtland set a long jump meet record of 24-4.75, which is US#11. 

Connor Rutherford of Blacksburg broke Jacob Hunter’s 3,200 meet record of 9:09.18 by running 9:07.13.

The Tabb boys won the 3A title with 46.50 points as Lance Koontz won the 400 (49.22) and was part of the runner-up 4x400 relay. 

Abingdon High girls won the 3A team title with 66 points, with Makaleigh Jessee winning the 3,200 (10:56.67). She was fifth in the 1,600 and ran on the second-place 4x800 relay. 

York senior Ciarra Moore went 40-0 to win the girls triple jump title and won the long jump (18-4). 

Madelyn Moles of Christiansburg cleared 12-6 in the pole vault. 

2A & 1A - Harrisonburg 

The Strasburg girls tallied 68 points to win the 2A title. 

Freshman Elizabeth Trant of Poquoson won the 1,600 (5:10.66) and 3,200 (11:03.29) titles.  

Glenvar boys scored 62 points to bring home the 2A crown. 

Senior Leonie Bentley of Brunswick High won the 2A 100 (10.52) and 200 (21.49). 

The Auburn girls repeated as 1A state champs with 70 points, while the Lancaster boys scored 82.50. 

Lancaster junior Reece Rhodes led the way with wins in the shot put (60-11) and discus (161-6).

Class 6A - Patriot boys 55 points, South County girls 67 points - RESULTS

Class 1A - Lancaster boys 82.50 points, Auburn girls 70 points - RESULTS
